Taking advantage of the off-season, Vietnam has surpassed Thailand for the first time in durian export value to China, with 32,750 tons in the first two months of the year.

This data is sourced from the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, citing Chinese Customs. According to the report, in the first two months of this year, China imported 53,110 tons of fresh durians from various countries, a 0.4% increase compared to last year.

Among these, Vietnam surpassed Thailand to claim the top position in exporting this agricultural product to the billion-people market, with 32,750 tons. This quantity is 2.4 times higher than the same period in 2023. As a result, Vietnam’s durian market share in China increased to 57%, compared to 32% last year.

Thailand dropped to second place, with 19,016 tons, more than a 50% decrease compared to the same period. China also imported fresh durians from the Philippines, but the market share is small, around 1%.

Regarding price, the average price per ton of Vietnamese durians exported to China is $4,916, lower than Thailand’s $6,133.

Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, Secretary General of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, commented that thanks to favorable climate conditions, Vietnamese durians can bear fruit year-round. Vietnam shares a border with China, facilitating transportation and offering competitive prices.

Also, thanks to the favorable export conditions to China, durian prices hit a record high in March. In the Mekong Delta provinces, the price of this commodity has continuously increased. Each kilogram of type A Monthong durians (2.7 cavities weighing 2-5 kg) is approximately 218,000-230,000 VND; type B (2.5 cavities) is 195,000-200,000 VND, and type C is over 100,000 VND. These prices represent a 15% increase compared to the same period and the previous month. This is also the highest level ever recorded. However, the price of Ri 6 durians is decreasing due to abundant supply.

To prepare for signing the protocol on official exports of frozen durians to China, the Plant Protection Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) requested localities to review planting areas and processing facilities at the end of last month. If frozen durians are licensed, according to Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, it will help increase the export value of this agricultural product by an additional 30% annually. This year, durian exports are expected to reach 3.5 billion USD.

According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in the first three months of the year, fruit and vegetable exports reached more than 1.2 billion USD, an increase of nearly 26% compared to the same period in 2023. This year, fruit and vegetable exports are forecast to grow by 15-20%, bringing in 6-6.5 billion USD.
