The price of exported durian has also increased significantly over the past six months, ranging from $4.3 to $4.5 (approximately 110,000 to 115,000 VND) per kilogram, depending on market conditions. Among the top ten markets for Vietnamese durian exports in the first half of the year, China ranks first with an import value of $1.22 billion, accounting for 92.4% of the total. Exports to China have risen by 46% compared to last year. Thailand follows in second place with $47 million in imports, reflecting a 90.5% increase from the first half of 2023.
Expanding Durian Export Opportunities
Additionally, Japan and Cambodia have increased their imports of Vietnamese durian. Japan’s expenditure reached $2.6 million, while Cambodia spent $1.6 million, representing increases of twofold and 23-fold, respectively, compared to the same period last year.
Contributions of Durian Exports to Vietnam’s Economy
Mr. Đặng Phúc Nguyên, Secretary-General of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, noted that durian exports significantly contribute to the overall export value of fruits and vegetables. The harvest season in the Central Highlands from July to October is anticipated to further enhance the export value of this fruit this year. By year-end, durian exports could approach $3 billion, providing substantial revenue for Vietnam and improving the livelihoods of farmers.
Future of Durian Exports and Market Regulations
Vietnamese and Chinese authorities have finalized technical discussions and are set to sign a protocol for the export of frozen durian soon. Moreover, China is likely to open its market for imports of products such as medicinal herbs, coconuts, and other frozen fruits from Vietnam in the near future.
Addressing Contamination Issues in Durian Exports
However, recent reports indicate that some batches of Vietnamese durian exports have been flagged for contamination with prohibited substances. Authorities are currently investigating the issue and coordinating with their Chinese counterparts. Initial inspection results suggest that the contamination did not originate from the growing regions. Consequently, authorities are urging businesses and traders to strictly adhere to sourcing regulations, ensuring compliance with designated growing areas and packaging standards required by importing countries to maintain their market position and strive for a leadership role.
