Ginger from Kỳ Sơn, Nghe An, is now gaining recognition worldwide. The crop once helped many H’mong households escape poverty. Today, thanks to organic farming, it brings stable and higher incomes, especially as demand for export fresh ginger continues to grow.

Kỳ Sơn District has nearly 900 hectares of ginger. Farmers cultivate it on mountain slopes over 700 meters above sea level. According to Nguyen Ba Cuong, Deputy Head of the Agriculture Office, ginger has become the district’s main crop. Many families now earn from several tens to over one hundred million Vietnamese dong per year.

Ginger has long been part of local farming traditions. The H’mong community mainly grows two types: small ginger for domestic use and elephant ginger for fresh ginger export. Local processors turn the harvest into essential oil, spices, herbal ingredients, and food additives.

Why Kỳ Sơn Ginger Stands Out

The region’s soil gives Kỳ Sơn ginger its distinct heat and aroma. It contains molybdenum, copper, zinc, nitrogen, phosphorus, and high potassium. As a result, the ginger develops strong Gingerol levels and rich essential oil content.

Experience also plays a crucial role. Farmers select firm and glossy rhizomes aged 10–11 months for planting. They adjust planting seasons to the cool, misty climate. Additionally, they often build soil around the plant base to help it grow well. Many also rotate land every two to three years to protect soil fertility.

YOMEX Helps Local Ginger Reach Global Buyers

Yomex Company Limited saw that farmers still relied on traditional methods. Therefore, the company worked with district authorities to train farmers in modern cultivation techniques, pest control, and post-harvest care. It also partnered with households to grow ginger following organic standards, helping the crop enter export fresh ginger markets.

The project started with only 20 households. Today, YOMEX works with 146 families across 30 hectares. As a result, farming efficiency has increased significantly.

YOMEX is now the largest ginger buyer in Nghe An. Each year, it purchases more than 1,000 tons. The company supplies domestic processors and also exports both fresh and dried ginger.

Organic cultivation yields large, clean rhizomes. Many farmers reach nearly 30 tons per hectare. One hectare can generate up to 200 million VND—ten times more than maize or rice. This year, both price and yield improved. Consequently, many households earned several hundred million dong.
