According to the Plant Cultivation Department’s data from 2019, Vietnam had approximately 7,600 hectares of mangosteen, with major cultivation areas in the Mekong Delta and Southeast regions, covering 3,800 hectares and 2,900 hectares respectively, yielding around 26,000 tons and over 11,000 tons. Provinces with significant mangosteen cultivation include Ben Tre, Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, Can Tho, Hau Giang, Soc Trang, Binh Duong, and Dong Nai.

Mangosteen is a low-maintenance crop with high profitability, comparable to durian. However, the major difference is that mangosteen trees are perennial and take over 10 years to bear fruit. Consequently, current mangosteen plantations in Vietnam have a significant advantage due to limited competition, while Thailand, a major competitor, has proactively reduced its production.

Many People Are “Crazy” About Mangosteen

For those outside tropical climates, mangosteen might seem like an exotic fruit. However, with increasing global trade and exchange, Asian fruits have gained popularity. Mangosteen has become a highly sought-after fruit.

In an international food group, Vietnamese mangosteen has become a focal point, with many expressing their admiration for this fruit. According to a survey by the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Trade Association, 95% of Chinese consumers are satisfied with the quality of Vietnamese mangosteen. They find Vietnamese mangosteen to be delicious, sweet, firm, with small seeds and thin skin. Additionally, Vietnamese mangosteen is praised for its competitive pricing, often 10-20% lower than mangosteen from other countries, giving it a competitive edge in the Chinese market.

Not only is product popular globally, but it is also cherished by Vietnamese people, especially the youth. In 2023, the famous mangosteen salad from Binh Duong created a social media frenzy, causing a shortage and price increase of green mangosteen. At its peak, peeled green mangosteen was priced between 400,000 and 500,000 VND per kilogram.

In the U.S., green mangosteen prices on various online forums have reached over $120 per kilogram (more than 2.9 million VND) due to the demand from Vietnamese expatriates. One young person noted, “Eating ripe is delicious, but green in chicken salad is ten times better. It’s crispy and sweet, not at all bitter.”
