The recent boom in fresh coconuts in China is due to the country’s growing awareness of the health benefits of coconut water. Natural coconut water contains potassium, calcium, magnesium, and its electrolyte content is relatively close to human body fluids. Besides electrolytes, coconut water is a completely natural, low-calorie beverage that can be consumed without added sugars or additives, meeting the demand for “clean ingredients” among many Chinese consumers.
Due to the surge in demand, the supply of coconuts in Dongjiao Town and Hainan can only satisfy a small portion of the Chinese market. Hainan’s annual coconut production is roughly 200 to 230 million, while the annual demand exceeds 2 billion. As a result, China must import a significant quantity of coconuts from Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam.
Additionally, according to Chinese reports, there are some differences between Southeast Asian coconuts and those from Hainan. For example, coconut water from Southeast Asia tends to be sweeter, while Hainan coconuts have a stronger aroma.
Following the success of durians, fresh coconuts are set to become another Vietnamese product to be exported to China, promising to generate hundreds of millions of USD from this market.
