Before durian, dragon fruit used to be an exported fruit bringing in over 1 billion USD annually, but now its sales have halved.
On July 23rd, the Vietnam Association of Fruit and Vegetable reported detailed information on the export values of key fruit and vegetable items to various markets in the first six months of 2024.
During this period, durian continued to maintain its top position in export value, reaching 1.323 billion USD, a 44.4% increase compared to the same period last year. Dragon fruits ranked second with 292 million USD, a 14.3% decrease year-on-year. Just a few years ago, dragon fruits held the top position in export value for the fruit and vegetable sector. In 2018, its highest record was nearly 1.3 billion USD for Vietnam, but it has gradually declined since, falling below the 1 billion USD mark in 2022.
In the first half of this year, despite a 26% decline in import value, China remained the largest market for dragon fruits imports, accounting for 203 million USD, which is 68% of the market share. Encouragingly, most other dragon fruit import markets saw increased values: India at 21 million USD, a 35% increase; the US at 18 million USD, a 90% increase; South Korea at 10 million USD, a 36% increase; and UAE at 7.8 million USD, a 60% increase. This indicates that Vietnamese enterprises have effectively diversified their market strategies.
The sharp decline in China’s import of Vietnamese dragon fruits is attributed to a significant increase in domestic supply, gradually replacing imported goods.
Notably, the export of lychees also saw a sharp decline due to seasonal factors and reduced production. Vietnam exported lychees worth 23.6 million USD in the first half of 2024, a 46% decrease compared to the same period last year. China, France, Malaysia, and the Netherlands were the four largest import markets for Vietnamese lychees.
