Japanese people liken Vietnamese sweet potato to “ginseng” due to their significant health benefits. China, after tasting sweet potato, became enamored and exported tens of millions of dollars’ worth of them, from tubers to leaves.

According to preliminary statistics from the General Department of Customs, in October, Vietnam’s exports of vegetables and fruits reached $22.3 million USD, a decrease of 4% compared to October 2022. Over the first 10 months of 2023, exports of vegetables and fruits amounted to $223.5 million USD, marking a 4.9% increase compared to the same period last year.

Vietnam is exporting a variety of vegetables in large quantities such as chili peppers, cauliflower, corn, and Chinese cabbage. Among them, sweet potatoe are particularly favored by foreigners.

Specifically, sweet potato exports in October reached nearly $2 million USD, down 8.7% compared to October 2022. Over the first 10 months of the year, sweet potato exports reached $22.45 million USD, a decrease of 11.1% year-on-year, accounting for 9.6% of the export structure. This commodity ranks as the second-largest in terms of value within the vegetable category, following chili peppers.

One of Vietnam’s top export markets for sweet potatoes is Japan, where they are sold at high prices exceeding $2,000 USD per ton. Although sweet potatoes are a common food in many countries worldwide, none seem to value them as highly as Japan does. Japan has conducted numerous studies to demonstrate the cancer-fighting properties of sweet potatoes. They are also dubbed the “ginseng of the South” by the Japanese people for their longevity-promoting qualities.

Additionally, sweet potatoes have seen a significant increase in exports to China in 2023. This is due to a plant quarantine agreement signed between the two countries in April this year, facilitating official exports of sweet potatoes to China.

The area allocated for sweet potatoes cultivation initially exceeded 1,000 hectares, spread across various regions nationwide including Quang Ninh, Dak Lak, Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Vinh Long, and Dong Thap. Vinh Long province organized the first export shipment of sweet potatoes to the Chinese market.

As a result, sweet potatoes prices have doubled compared to the same period last year, reaching 15,000-20,000 VND per kilogram, bringing substantial profits to many farmers in the Central Highlands. Sweet potatoes have become a lucrative crop, with farms in Gia Lai reporting earnings of 80-200 million VND per hectare, the highest profit margins ever recorded.

Currently, sweet potatoes and chili peppers account for 86% of the total value of vegetable exports to China. According to statistics from the Department of Crop Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), Vietnam has approximately 100,000 hectares dedicated to sweet potatoes cultivation, with a total production reaching 1.2 – 1.3 million tons. The highest productivity is recorded in the Mekong Delta region, reaching up to 25 tons per hectare, which is twice that of the Northern region, where productivity is around 12-13 tons per hectare.

Binh Tan district, Vinh Long province, is considered the sweet potatoes capital of Vietnam, with an annual average production area of over 13,000 hectares and a yield of over 380,000 tons. Lam Dong province is also a significant region for sweet potatoes cultivation. According to statistics from the Da Lat Customs Sub-Department, sweet potatoes exports from the province in 2022 amounted to 8,776 tons to Japan, and additional exports to markets such as South Korea, Singapore, and Malaysia totaled 4,561 tons.
