Preferred by Americans over ‘made in China’ products, Vietnam’s “king of fruits,” the pomelo, has made waves in the land of the stars and stripes, earning tens of millions of USD. It faces competition from China in the US market and has set export records for five consecutive years.

According to preliminary figures from the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, in 2023, pomelos have been noted for a significant increase in export value. In the first 8 months of 2023, pomelo exports reached 29.6 million USD, a 144% increase compared to the same period in 2022, marking the highest growth rate in five years.

At the end of 2022, fresh pomelos—Vietnam’s 7th most exported fruit after mangoes, lychees, dragon fruit, longans, rambutans, and milk apples—were allowed to be imported into the United States after five years of negotiations by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. In the U.S., Vietnamese pomelos face their biggest competitor from China. In early 2023, the first shipment of Vietnamese pomelos via sea freight arrived in the U.S. after a 40-day journey and received praise from consumers. Despite being priced up to 3.4 times higher than Chinese pomelos, American consumers appreciated the moderate sweetness, tanginess, ease of peeling, and suitability to their taste preferences, without bitterness or excessive juiciness.

Even Deputy Ministers of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Jennifer Moffitt and Alexis Taylor, acknowledged the quality during their visit to Vietnam in early 2023. Deputy Minister Taylor, in charge of agricultural trade issues, exclaimed upon tasting a pomelo: “Fantastic. 10/10. I look forward to seeing this fruit in U.S. stores and purchasing it as a local consumer.”

Green-skinned pomelos exported to the U.S. weigh between 1-1.7 kg per fruit, retailing from 375,000 to 900,000 VND each in supermarkets. Despite global pomelo supply, Vietnamese pomelos are considered advantageous in capturing the U.S. market.

The U.S. has a large demand for fruits, importing about 30% of its total annual consumption, equivalent to approximately 3.6 million tons, presenting a significant opportunity for Vietnamese fruits, particularly fresh pomelos, to enter this market. Vietnamese pomelos have also been officially exported to New Zealand since December 2022.

Historically, pomelos have been valued for their numerous health benefits, such as using the leaves for aromatherapy to treat colds and headaches, using the peel to aid digestion and relieve abdominal pain, or making pomelo peel tea. Pomelo seeds’ pectin can be extracted as a hemostatic medicine. Pomelo pulp extract is used to treat dehydration and vitamin C deficiency in children. Pomelos are popular due to their health benefits, including boosting immunity, regulating blood pressure, rejuvenating skin, and aiding in weight loss.

According to the Plant Protection Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), Vietnamese fresh pomelos have been exported to 12 countries and territories. Currently, Vietnam has 105,400 hectares dedicated to pomelo cultivation, producing nearly 905,000 tons annually, with diverse varieties tailored to different regions. The Mekong Delta region alone accounts for approximately 32,000 hectares of pomelo cultivation, yielding 369,000 tons annually. The total pomelo production forecast for 2023 is estimated at around 1.1 million tons, encompassing green-skinned pomelos, Nam roi pomelos, Dien pomelos, and other varieties.
