In 2023, longan exports exceeded 14 million USD, with stable export prices for Vietnamese longan. Currently, the buying price for Ido longan, a Thai variety purchased from orchards, fluctuates between 16,000 and 18,000 VND per kilogram. At this price range, farmers earn profits ranging from 8 to 15 million VND per hectare (1,000 m2).
Assessing the potential of lychee and longan, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, these are major fruit crops in the Northern provinces, covering approximately 98.3 thousand hectares, which constitute 27% of the total fruit tree area in the entire region. Specifically, longan occupies 58.8 thousand hectares, while lychee covers 39.5 thousand hectares, concentrated in some Northern Central and Red River Delta provinces. Lychee and longan are characteristic tropical fruits of Vietnam renowned for their exceptional flavor, serving as key products for both domestic consumption and export, providing abundant raw materials for processing industries.
The cultivation of lychee and longan represents a sustainable livelihood for many local farmers, generating significant income for provinces such as Bac Giang, Hung Yen, Hai Duong, and Son La. This contributes to building local brands, attracting investment, and fostering tourism, not only benefiting localities but also contributing to the overall development of the region.
In recent years, provinces like Bac Giang, Hung Yen, Hai Duong, and Son La have implemented various projects to enhance the quality and value of their cultivation areas, investing in scientific and technological applications to increase productivity, ensure product quality and safety, meet domestic consumption standards, and comply with export requirements. Consequently, the harvested output of lychee and longan has been maintained or steadily increased over the years.
Despite these favorable aspects, the abundant supply poses significant pressure on consumption as export markets face sharp declines, while domestic consumption demand also remains limited. The export market is volatile and carries inherent risks, particularly for fresh lychee and longan due to their large concentrated production, short preservation and consumption periods.
The traditional market, particularly China, remains the largest with increasing demands for quality, inspection, labeling, packaging, and related regulations on origin tracing, preservation, transportation, and payment methods.
In other markets, aside from stringent non-trade barriers, we also face the reality of declining purchasing power due to high inflation, our efforts to reduce production costs failing to meet consumer affordability trends.
Therefore, the Ministry of Industry and Trade believes that diversifying export markets and products, diversifying distribution channels including cross-border e-commerce, remain effective solutions in the short and long term. Maintaining and developing traditional markets like China is crucial not only in border regions but also in deeper inland provinces, which still have untapped potential for exploitation. Simultaneously, maximum efforts are needed to develop nearby markets within ASEAN, leveraging cost advantages and transportation times to ensure competitive pricing and market share growth.
For challenging yet potential markets such as the United States, EU, Japan, and Australia, a systematic approach emphasizing premium product segments, quality, food safety, processing technology, and brand storytelling is essential.
Moreover, timely and substantive export support activities need to continue. This entails providing accurate market information, trade policies, standards, regulations for imported products, consumer demands, and forecasted information on factors influencing the competitive capacity of Vietnamese lychee and longan products.
