In Vietnam, papayas are cheap as dirt, while imported ones cost up to a million dong per fruit. Contrary to the abundance of papayas sold openly in Vietnamese markets for 15,000 to 25,000 dong per fruit, Japanese papayas imported into Vietnam can fetch prices as high as one million dong each.

Papaya is a common and affordable fruit, favored for its nutritional value and pleasant, sweet taste. However, recently in Vietnam, there has been a curiosity about imported papayas, which are quite expensive.

A well-known fruit import shop in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City is currently selling Okinawa papayas from Japan at 990,000 VND per kilogram. According to the seller, these costly papayas are imported from Hawaii and cultivated by the Japanese in Okinawa, where the climate and soil are suitable for this variety.

Okinawa papayas are moderately sized, shaped like a Western pear. When ripe, their skin turns a lemon-yellow color, and the flesh is firm and solid, unlike the softer, watery papayas found in Vietnam.

Furthermore, Okinawa papayas have a sugar content of 15 – 16 Brix (a measure of sugar content in a solution with water). Due to their pleasant taste and aroma, they are highly favored by the Japanese.

Market surveys show that Japanese papayas are being sold widely at prices ranging from 950,000 to 1.2 million VND per kilogram. Apart from ripe fruits, retailers also import a considerable amount of green papayas for easier transportation in large quantities and longer preservation.

Acknowledging the growing interest in Okinawa papayas, Ms. Hoai Anh, a high-end fruit vendor in Hai Ba Trung (Hanoi), mentioned that she has received numerous inquiries about this fruit recently. However, due to limited supply, she only accepts pre-orders with partial payment, and delivery may only be possible by early June. Currently, her shop has nearly 20 orders for Okinawa papayas.

“These papayas are quite small, weighing only around 500-600 grams each. Because they are air-shipped and the original price is quite high, around 500,000 VND and up, the price of papayas in Vietnam is relatively high. Due to their expensive nature, they require careful storage and are almost never available in stores,” Ms. Hoai Anh explained.

After assessing the initial sales response, she plans to import more. If demand remains high, she may arrange two shipments per week.

The primary customers are mainly affluent women who purchase them for enjoyment or as gifts.

In contrast, Ms. Huyen Trang, a customer buying fruits on Ba Trieu Street (Hanoi), prefers Vietnamese papayas due to their affordability and freshness when purchased daily.

“A tiny fruit costing a million dong is really expensive. I might buy it for a try or as a gift, but it’s hard to afford it regularly,” commented Ms. Huyen Trang.
