Cheap onion flooding Vietnamese markets have crippled the economy of the world’s fifth-largest nation, with prices skyrocketing by 165% in just a year. This surge follows the country’s export ban, exacerbating the onion price hike.

In India, the absence of onion in a curry is often seen as disrespectful. Thus, even minor price fluctuations of this bulbous vegetable have become hotly debated topics among millions nationwide over the past year.

According to the Lasalgaon Agricultural Produce Market Committee, India’s largest wholesale onion market, onion prices have surged by 165% in the past year. Prices of other vegetables like tomatoes have also doubled compared to the same period last year, driven by adverse weather conditions wreaking havoc on crops.

The price of food has risen by 8.7% annually in both April and May, comprising nearly half of the overall consumer basket. This significant increase has pushed inflation above India’s central bank’s target of 4%, complicating monetary policy adjustments.

“The Indian economy remains hostage to intertwined food price shocks,” said Michael Patra, Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, in a recent monetary policy statement.

Sanjeev Chopra, Minister of Food, noted, “Imposing stock limits is just one option. We have several tools to ensure food prices remain stable.” The government may also consider removing the current 40% import tax to keep prices low.

With signs indicating these cost pressures may persist due to worsening weather conditions, at least 200,000 people have been affected by recent floods in northeastern India, a key rice-growing region.

Earlier on May 4th, India’s government announced lifting export restrictions on onions, a day after increasing export taxes to 40%. Alongside the export ban removal, the Indian government set a minimum export price of $550 per ton for onions.

India’s onion production for the Spring of 2024 is estimated at 19.1 million tons, a high output allowing foreign traders to serve the domestic market, which consumes around 1.7 million tons monthly.

These policy shifts in the world’s largest exporter of vegetables come just ahead of a national election, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeks an unprecedented third term.

Onions, a staple in India’s cuisine, remain a politically sensitive agricultural commodity. In this South Asian nation, onions are typically grown thrice annually during the monsoon, winter, and summer seasons.

Traders estimate that India, with shorter shipping times than China or Egypt to many markets, accounts for over half of Asia’s total onion imports.
