Supply shortage and low inventory levels have caused pepper prices to skyrocket, making it the most expensive in the world.

According to estimates from the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), in May 2024, Vietnam’s pepper exports reached 30,000 tons valued at $135 million, up 14.4% in volume and 15.9% in value compared to April 2024, and up 3.7% in volume and 49.9% in value compared to May 2023.

Cumulatively for the first five months of 2024, Vietnam’s estimated pepper exports reached 113,000 tons worth $487 million, a decrease of 14.1% in volume but an increase of 19.7% in value compared to the same period last year.

The average export price of Vietnam’s pepper in May 2024 was estimated at $4,492 per ton, up 1.3% from April 2024 and 44.6% from May 2023. Over the first five months of 2024, the average export price was estimated at $4,308 per ton, up 39.3% from the same period last year.

The Vietnam Pepper Association reported that the United States continued to be the largest export market for Vietnam’s pepper in May 2024, with 7,692 tons, a 2.4% increase from the previous month. Cumulatively for the first five months, pepper exports to this market reached 30,466 tons, accounting for 26.6% and a 44.4% increase compared to the same period last year. Additionally, exports to China saw a resurgence in May with 3,137 tons, a 381.9% increase from April but a 69.4% decrease compared to May 2023.

Domestically, pepper prices have continued to rise in recent days. At the trading session on June 7, black pepper prices in the Central Highlands and Southeast regions were purchased at 160,000 – 164,000 VND/kg, nearly 60% higher than mid-May and the highest in 8 years.

In the latest trading session, the International Pepper Community (IPC) listed Lampung black pepper (Indonesia) at $5,614 per ton, up 0.02%; Brazil ASTA 570 black pepper at $6,800 per ton; and Kuching black pepper (Malaysia) ASTA at $4,900 per ton. Muntok white pepper was at $7,397 per ton, up 0.01%; Malaysia ASTA white pepper remained at $7,300 per ton. Vietnam’s black pepper traded at $6,500 per ton for 500 g/l grade and $6,500 per ton for 550 g/l grade; white pepper was at $9,500 per ton.

The Import-Export Department forecasts that pepper prices will continue to rise in the near future, albeit at a slower pace. Nevertheless, this is unlikely to prevent Vietnam’s “black gold” from reaching the $1 billion export milestone this year.
